Cheap Road Banners and Signs

Have you seen these new MMDA signs in the metro? I did a double take when I saw this in Ortigas. For my 2 foreigner readers, it means do not cross, somebody died here already or something like that. It is obviously a warning about jaywalking, but depending on your mood can either amuse you or irritate you. Today it irritates me! Where do they get those cheap banner stands? Why can't they follow international or standards for road signs and stop irritating use with these inanities? But despite this sign, you still see people crossing the road where it says not to! You also see a traffic enforcer who turns a blind eye to these people. In this spot, one single pedestrian who crosses the street will cause traffic. But should they move just some 20 steps or more, they will see a pedestrian crossing where they can walk without fearing for their life! And you know what, jaywalking is a crime! I lost my first job prospect when I was caught in EDSA and the traffic enforcers hauled me to the precinct. Either I pay some 20 pesos which that time was the only money I had or miss my job interview. Of course I missed my job interview. How am I supposed to go back to school anyway if I pay the fine. Since then, I only cross the street where it say as I can. I climb the steep footbridge whenever I should and neither tempt fate nor complain. So while I am irritated at the MMDA for putting these stupid signs, I am more irritated at people who just don't get it!

Police Without Helmet

In an ideal world, I won't have to ask the question "Are Police Officers Exempted from Wearing Helmets While Riding Their Motorcycles?" So either we are in an ideal world right now or something is wrong in the picture. You decide, he he he.

This was taken in Ortigas corner EDSA, near the POEA office where my husband and I were on our motorcycle, and we were each wearing our helmets for protection.

Cheap Eyeglasses For Me

As a mother, you would probably agree with me that the last person we usually buy stuff for is ourselves. I buy everything and anything that my kids and husband need, but I usually scrimp on things for myself. I need eyeglasses, but I don't have one because they are expensive. So when I read about Eric's Review of Zenni Optical at the Examiner, I knew that I can now get one for myself! Just like the picture of the eyeglasses from the #1 online RX glasses store above that I absolutely love. If eyeglasses are as low as $8, then I don't have to feel guilty about buying even two pairs for myself! I can even buy another pair for my son and another for my husband. Shipping costs is only $4.95 for any quantity so I get to save a lot more. So if you need lowest price progressive glasses, you now know where you must order them from!

Child Proof Your House

I am a mother of three, and when I say that child proofing or baby proofing your house is a must, then you must believe me. I know it for a fact that our child's safety is of paramount importance. We can never be too paranoid about safety when our child's life and our sanity depend on it. And besides, safety should always be a way of life for us parents. We must be confident that our house is the safest place for our children, and that no harm will come to them on our watch. So when I discovered Kids Safe, I know that I have found a safety partner!

Here are just some child safety tips for your house:

1. Make sure that poisonous substances are properly labeled and kept out of reach of children. We have heard of horror stories about silver cleaning agents being placed in mineral water bottles and being ingested by kids so we must beware.
2. Objects that can be bumped or those that can fell to your children must be kept down or held tightly in place. Examples are TV or books or other items placed on top of cabinets that can fall to your children and cause head injury.
3. Floors must not be slippery. I am talking about tiles and vinyl floors that can cause our children, and even adults to fall and break body parts! You can put mats to protect them from slipping.
4. Matches and other flammable materials must be kept away from children as well. They should also be kept away from the kitchen where they can hurt themselves a thousand ways! You can use baby gates or other child safety locks to keep them away from other such places like balconies and stairs.

These are just some tips to keep our kids out of harm's way and f you need more safety tips and ideas on child proofing your house, check out this KidSafe Blog and their updates at Facebook, Twitter and You Tube.

Mellow Yellow Monday: Halo-Halo

MellowYellowBadge

What is best during summer? This concoction is called "Halo-Halo." It has banana, ube, sago, gulaman, macapuno, pinipig topped with ice cream on shredded ice poured generously with milk! We had this delicious halo-halo at Chowking after our lunch for Ishi's graduation!

Delicious in this summer heat!

Green Nature Resort and Leisure Park, San Mateo Rizal

Update April 2012: Check out also these swimming resorts in Montalban, Rizal with cheap entrance fees!

These pictures were taken at Green Nature Resort and Leisure Park in San Mateo, Rizal. We were there in May 2008 to celebrate the 7th birthday of my husband's niece. The entrance fee for kids and adults for 8am-6pm was P150.00 and the rental fee for an open gazebo for 15 pax was P1,000.00. I would say we had great value for our money as the resort was clean and the facilities very adequate. Despite being peak season, the resort was neat and there were no drunken men bawling at the karaoke. They place heavy corkage fees on wines and alcoholic beverages so the resort was really very peaceful. Further below is directions on how to get there.

There were several pools for and a very shallow pool for kids. There was a big slide, and several smaller ones for kids.

There was also a big play ground for the kids and even for adults.

There were basketball, volleyball, tennis and badminton courts and the counsins had a great time playing despite the summer heat!

There were enough cottages to choose from and rooms are also available for those who would like to rent them.
If you look at our pictures, you can say that we truly enjoyed our visit! The kids didn't want to leave. That is my daughter below, almost throwing a tantrum!
Here is are picture of the whole clan enjoying the pool. Canyou imagine the fun we had after that photo was taken?

We hope to get back to this resort this summer season. I don't know if this number still works, but just in case you want to book, you may call 2973907 or 2973988. To get to Green Nature Resort and Leisure Park, in Cubao, take jeepney going to Montalban or SAn Mateo and ask to be dropped off to Green Nature. You will still need to ride a tricycle to the resort. For those with private vehicles, just follow the jeep :-), sorry!

Proud Mommy!

I am one proud mommy! My little girl, Ishi just graduated from Kinder yesterday and she was awarded a medal for being most behaved! She didn't get any award for academic excellence but I am okay with it. She will have more than enough years to make up for it. All I want for her is to enjoy school at this age and be a well-adjusted kid. And she is!

Look how happy she looks here! She poses gamely for her picture lover mommy, without much complaint. Okay, later she did. I guess she grew tired of giving me that pretty smile! But now that classes is over, I have to think of ways to keep her occupied. I am wondering if she is old enough for Hermit Crab Care. I will help her of course. Or should I get her another pet? Should I enroll her in some classes?
Oh well, I still have some weeks to think about this. As of ow, I am just a proud mother!

Friday Quotes: Words

"Be careful of the words you say,
Keep them short and sweet.
You never know, from day to day,
Which ones you'll have to eat."

They say that words are mightier than the sword and I have to agree. We sometimes utter words that we do not realize are hurtful and cannot be taken back. That is why we should always be careful of what we say. While we must make sure to always speak truthfully, we should also have consideration for the feelings of others. We must also remember that we may have to take back what we said if we are wrong so we must make sure that what we said was not hurtful. I am sometimes guilty of saying hurtful words, especially when I am mad so I am looking at some articles on anger management. I am checking out Article Alley for some good reads on this topic. I also have to invest in some books. I know that I need to manage my temper and to learn to speak more kindly. I may also need to look for articles on how to speak my truth in such a way that they are not unkind. Sometimes, people listen to the truth more when it sounds quite right on their ears, and not when spoken so brutally!

Litratong Pinoy: Likas

My Son's Bike Was Stolen- Time To Get An Insurance?

Remember this bike we gave our son just last December as a Christmas present? Well, it was stolen last Saturday. We were not at home when it happened as we were visiting my sister in Taytay for her son's 2nd birthday. One of the tenants inside the compound had a drinking spree, and bike was discovered missing Sunday morning. Too bad there is no motor trade insurance for bicycles. My husband was understandably furious! We had a talk with the neighbor about the incident and we extracted from them a promise that they will pay for the theft. We suspect that one of their visitors took the bike when they went home after midnight. There were two bikes inside the compound and the bigger one was covering ours. But they left the other bike and even moved it from its usual place. Of course, the neighbor denied that one of their friends would do it, but it was a strange coincidence that we were not home, and they had people coming in and out of the gate and the bike went missing! It breaks my heart that just last night when we asked Drexelle to buy something from the store and then he did a double-take to get his bike, only to realize it was gone. He just scratched and shook his head and then went out. My husband told his mother that it was up to her to decide whether she should ask the tenants to leave, but she was hesitant since they promised to pay for the loss, in installment! But I am not sure that I can still trust them. Oh my!

Mellow Yellow Monday

I love plants and even at work, I have some to keep me company. I bought this one when I went to Divisoria one weekend and then promptly forgot it in my bag. It stayed there for 2 days but was thankfully alive when I saw it the following Monday when I was looking for my keys at the office!
I just pour on some water every morning and its good to go! I just love me some yellow!

Friday Quotes: Fat!

"If nature had intended for our skeletons to be visible it would have put them on the outside of our bodies.” - Elmer Rice

This Friday, I am looking for another excuse not to watch my weight. Ha ha! Two years ago, I was at an ideal 123 pounds. Back then, I felt good about myself. I was eating sensibly and would never thought I would ever need a Liposuction. But now, after foregoing my regular run and ab exercises, I am 15 pounds heavier! I know that I really have to go back to the gym again but since I had two odontecs or impacted tooth removed last month, I still can't! (Or is that another excuse?). And I desperately need to lose at least 5 pounds for a wedding I am attending in two weeks! Obviously, I have to watch what I eat and at least burn some extra calories by even walking, but I can't seem to get my groove back. I keep on setting the alarm at 4am for my run, then would just hit the snooze button once it rings. Gah, I wish I have a stronger motivation for losing some more unwanted weight. Other than feeling my pants slightly fitter than before and the double chin more prominent than ever, I think I am at the pink of health! And my brains knows it too, that's why it keeps on resisting all my good intentions! Ha ha, anyway, I will think of a more compelling reason to lose weight and then I will get on with it! Wish me luck!

Migraine Attack

I had the worst day last Monday when I had a headache so bad, I was really crying! I really wasn't sure what caused it at first. I had a good night's sleep and got up on time to prepare breakfast. Then at work, my friend Vangie was on leave because she went to Baguio for the Panagbenga festival and so I had to do the work of two people. I was hard at work on my computer as early as 8 am and by 11 am, I already had a headache. I paused from work, unable to concentrate anymore and rested my eyes. I tried doing other things away from the computer, but by then the headache was so bad. I skipped lunch to catch an hour of sleep, but at quarter past one, I was already looking for the nurse. The headache was so bad I was already crying to her on the phone. So she had me sleep at the clinic for 2 hours, but when I woke up it was still there. She told me that I may already need eyeglasses and I have to agree. I just realized that staring at the computer early that morning could have triggered the migraine attack. I used to wear eyeglasses, but they make me look old so I traded comfort for vanity! Ha ha, and now this migraine is what I reaped. Anyway, I will be sure to get new eyeglasses soon. While in pain, I realized that I would rather look old rather suffer again. Indeed, health is wealth!

The picture above was a mirror-project using my cellphone way back in 2007. I look awful in glasses!

Wednesday Happy Thoughts

Truth be told, I first thought I do not have so many things to be thankful for these past two days. I had the worst migraine attack last Monday and I stayed at the clinic for the whole afternoon until when my husband arrived to take me home. It was a little better yesterday and I wished I just stayed home, but I need my leaves so I went to work anyway. If I still want to send the kids to school and build that dream house, then I should will myself to get better and back to work. But thinking back, I realized that I do have some things to be grateful for :

1. My husband for his love and attention.
2. My eldest son for giving me my medicines and glass of water without being told.
3. My daughter for massaging my temples.
4. My Danniel for his butterfly kisses.
5. My mother for asking me what I wanted to eat (but I have no appetite)
6. My sister Kris for stepping up and taking charge in reviewing the kids for their exams.
7. My sister Dianne for coming to my office with snacks and TLC
8. My bosses for letting me rest at the clinic for the whole afternoon
9. Our nurse Malou for her kindness and the chismis!
10. Manny Pacquiao for Alaxan FR, haha!

So see, despite the pain I know that I am loved by these people around me and I am indeed very blesses to have them in my life!

Mellow Yellow Monday

MellowYellowBadge

This is my practice shots at macro photography using my canon point and shoot camera. I took these photos last Saturday hoping to upload them on time for Mellow Yellow Monday. But my brother-in law borrowed my cam for the weekend and just gave it back yesterday. So there is my excuse for this late post.
Anyway, can you see the starfish-shaped thingie in the flower? I just noticed it today, even after having this plant for so long! And they are very beautiful flowers!I took so many pictures of this plant to prefect my macro shots that I may need to get delete most them. But I don't think I will ever get tired of having this as my subject matter. They really look beautiful up close!

And look at the ants at this one! Can you see them? I have never fully appreciated their beauty up until now. Wow, I love macro photography!
And look at this flower here courtesy of my sis-in-law's garden? The flower turns yellow from orange, before turning brown and that just give the flower more beauty! Never mind that its well on its way to wilting! It looks very dramatic. Nature do have lots of wonders.
I just wish I have more time to play with my camera so I can discover more photography tricks, but life gets in the way sometimes, ha ha. Anyway, except more flower pictures in this blog soon.
